The viewer recognizes theatrical conventions and applies a theatrical framework as a mode of perception: it is theatre because you look at it as such. It's as if King and company and things are all on stage as characters in a blank play, all trying very hard to pretend, to play their social roles. The series raises questions about what is real and what is staged or constructed behavior.
